2015 Makeup Trends by Celebrity Makeup Artist Allison Brooke

Jan 27, 2015 Author: Katie Lara | Filed under: Uncategorized

It seems like we can forget all about the heavy eye makeup and strong lines when it comes to makeup. If the SAG Awards taught us anything it’s that 2015 is all about fresh, soft beauty.  We checked in with a celebrity makeup artist based in NYC, Allison Brooke. Here are a few trends as seen on the red carpet at this year’s SAG awards and Allison Brooke’s easy tips, tricks, and techniques to achieve the look!

Trend #1: A New Spin on Old Hollywood – Bright Red Lip

As seen on: Emma Stone, Reese Witherspoon, Sophia Vergara, Lupita Nyon’o

The red lip has been amped up for 2015 and is anything but boring.  Go shiny like Sophia and Lupita, or stand out with a fiery take on a classic red, like Emma and Reese.

  • Tip: Line and fill in lips with a red lip pencil for precision and long lasting color. Swipe a slightly brighter lipstick on top for a little pop.
  • Tip: Keep the look cohesive by dapping a little bit of your lipstick on you cheeks as a cream blush.
  • Tip: Keep the eyes natural, you don’t want your features competing with each other.  Let your lip have the spotlight.

Trend #2: The Daytime Smokey Eye

As seen on: Claire Danes, Emmy Rossum, Keira Knightly

This year’s smokey eye is soft, approachable, and romantic.

  • Tip: Swipe a soft brown eye shadow on lids.  Smudge a black or gray pencil liner on upper and lower lids.  It’s okay if the line isn’t perfect- that’s the idea.  Finish with lengthening mascara.
  • Tip: Keep skin, cheeks, and lips soft and glowey.  The look is effortless and undone.
  • Tip: Dab a shimmery highlight in the center of the lid to open up your eyes.

Trend #3: Bronzed and Peachy

As seen on: Meryl Streep, Naomi Watts, Julianne Moore

Warm skin with a luminous finish, nude lips, and peachy cheeks

  • Tip: Achieve a supple glow by applying cream bronzer over tinted moisturizer.  Dab blot powder only on the forehead, around the mouth and chin.
  • Tip: Look for blush and lipstick in the same color family.  Lighter skin tones should look for lipstick and blush with a pinky peach undertone.  Medium skin tones can wear true peach.  Darker skin tones should look for a stronger orange or copper tone.
  • Tip: Balance the look with soft neutral eyes and long curled lashes.

Top Tips for My Single Ladies to Have a Great Valentine’s Day

Jan 27, 2015 Author: Katie Lara | Filed under: Holiday, Lifestyle, Love and Travel

It’s almost Valentine’s Day! And if you’ve got a sweetie then it’s usually just the most pressure-filled date night of the year. If you’re looking for a romantic getaway, be sure to check out my top picks for romantic Valentine’s Day getaways. But I digress. If you’re single then it can be one of the most annoying nights of the year. Especially if you don’t feel like staying in and crying over a bottle of wine and box of chocolates. We checked in with relationship guru,  Dana Michel for her tips to help my single ladies stay sane out there. Here’s some wisdom she imparts:

# 1 Get a Wingman/Wingwomen

Get a friend to go out with you on Valentine’s Day. His/her job is to help you strike up conversations with interesting people. That person can be single or in a relationship; it doesn’t matter.

#2 Select an Ethnic Restaurant

Organize a Valentine’s dinner at an ethnic restaurant.  Authentic ethnic restaurants tend to have the least amount of Valentine’s Day decorations because the holiday does not exist in many places.  Go with your girlfriends or try and expand the group by asking each person to bring a single friend.

# 3 Be Open

Decide to talk to at least one new person a day between now and Valentine’s Day.   It can be as simple as making eye contact, smiling and saying “Hi, my name is Heidi”.  Don’t psyche yourself out!

#4 Attend a Valentine’s Day event just for singles

There are a lot of events for singles right now. The objective is to mingle: make sure to look for events with themes that interest you, so that you can increase your chances of meeting a like-minded date

#5 Love Yourself

You have two options – Go out or stay home. But being sad is out of the question. Turn it into a night of pampering yourself. Then, you should ready for a fabulous evening alone.

Remember: You control the day, the day does not control you

Jami Svay celebrity makeup tips
1. Kiss and makeup…

Ditch the traditional “red” lip and go for a more kissable look like a
delicious nude color. Try: Philosophy’s lip shine in Coconut Frosting it
gives a hint of shimmer with a mild sweet taste.

2. Run your fingers through my hair or maybe not…

Loose the hair spray for the night. Nothing is more un-sexy than hard mane.
Touchable, soft hair is always a “do”.  Try: Garnier’s Texture Spray for body
and bounce without the crunch.

3. Give it a glow…

For a quick J-Lo glow add a few drops of liquid luminizer to your
moisturizer. Try: Stila’s All Over Shimmer liquid.

4. Got a private beach…

Nothing says red-hot like bronzed skin. Use along the perimeter of your face
& jaw bone for a more realistic application. Also pick a brand that doesn’t
have too much shimmer. Try: Benefit’s Hoola Bronzer

5. It started with a wink…

Seduction begins with a good mascara! Give your eyes a bambi-like fringe
using lash fibers. It coats & builds on the ends of your natural lashes,
giving the appearance of falsies. Try: Loreal’s False Fiber Lash Mascara

Loving the Makeup Eraser

Jan 12, 2015 Author: Katie Lara | Filed under: Beauty

A few weeks ago I was sent a sample of the Makeup Eraser. When I was told that it would erase my makeup without any soap or harsh chemicals I told them to bring it on. You honestly have to try it to believe it. I’m here to tell you that it actually worked–even on my waterproof eyeliner and my tens of layers of mascara! All you do is wet your face and rub! And it really disappears! Well it makes the pretty pink towel black, but it comes completely off your face. And it’s good for 1000 washes!

The towel fibers swell and trap the makeup in between. I love that I don’t have to use harsh cleansers anymore and even better yet, I don’t have to pay for expensive makeup remover towelettes. Then when you’re done you just pop it in the wash and it’s good as new again!
